Being a “classy lady/person” – what it means to me.

Does being classy mean you always wear a skirt/heels, lipstick and never swear? Does it mean waiting until the 3rd date+ to have sex and smoking fancy cigarettes or expensive cigars? Traditional classy seems like something unattainable to me in some ways and the word seems to find its way in situations where it shouldn’t belong, making the word lose its true meaning. So I came up with my own version of the word classy.

From Merriam-Webster:
Classy: having or showing class. as a: elegant, stylish. b: having or reflecting high standards of personal behavior. c: admirably skillful and graceful.

To me, classy doesn’t mean:

- Putting someone down for their choices, i.e. she did or didn’t get pregnant at a certain age, she decided not to get married at all, etc.
- Being catty in general.
- Backstabbing and being generally disloyal to friends, family and lovers.
- Putting someone down for looking a certain way, or their accent, the way they walk etc.
- Putting YOURSELF down, or continuously saying “I’m fat” without bothering to do anything about it if you don’t like it.
- Being rude to people.

What classy does mean to me:

- Having a good vocabulary peppered with some four-letter words (they are just words after all, they’re just fun to say). Big, obscure words aren’t necessary.
- Doing what you want with yourself in the morning (whatever makeup/clothes/hairstyle you like) and carrying yourself with confidence.
- Being a courteous driver or a courteous pedestrian.
- Challenging yourself without degrading yourself.
- Allowing yourself pleasure without putting yourself in danger.
- Putting the golden rule into practice.
- Generally not being a jerk.

I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass. ~ Maya Angelou

I wrote the story myself. It’s about a girl who lost her reputation and never missed it. ~ Mae West

I guess classy is one of those words that can be redefined by whoever is using it. Care to add to it or put on some boxing gloves? ;)

I think you’re right – I guess it all comes down to courtesy and confidence. Easy enough, right?

I completely agree with you! The idea of being classy has turned into some kind of robotic idea for society. I believe that being classy is having respect for yourself and others and doing what you feel is best for yourself, without causing yourself any harm, whether it be mental or physical.

For me classy is being well behaved and educated. Not necessarily educated as in having a college degree but rather just taking interest in things like politics, art or literature.

I think the most unclassy thing is being rude, mean and not caring about anything of importance. Like some snobby girls I went to school with who thought they were better than everybody else even though they weren’t particularly intelligent nor nice.
