Kickass Female Characters

I realized what all of my favorite female characters have in common — none of them waited around for a man to save them. They took up their own swords and battled the bad guys, either because they had a cause to defend, a loved one to save or both. Luckily I had plenty of strong, badass female characters to grow up with.

As a kid I remember feeling relieved and excited that He-Man had a sister who was just as heroic as him.

Moving on in my childhood, Buffy the Vampire Slayer came in when I was 12 and had me practicing my karate kicks in my room. The show was just aces in general and I loved that she was actually the one doing her stunts. I stopped watching after the season where she died for the second (third?) time because I started getting bored with it.

Around the same time, I started reading a series of books and was introduced to two of my most favorite characters.

Kahlan and Cara from the Sword of Truth books by Terry Goodkind/The Legend of the Seeker TV show based on the books.

Tank Girl

I’ve never read the comics but after seeing the movie I knew I’d found another worthy female member of the order of badassery.

The part in the Return of the King where Eowyn rides into battle and slays the witch king is my favorite part in all three movies. She got a little help from a hobbit, but still, no “man” could kill the witch king. There are just some jobs that only a woman can do.

I had never even heard of a woman named Domino Harvey until this movie came out. Sadly, the real Domino Harvey passed away the same year the movie was released and before she could tell her true life story. She was an L.A. bounty hunter, but according to her Wikipedia page, she also volunteered at a fire and rescue company and worked on a ranch.

The Bride
How many (fictional) people can say they chopped their way out of their coffin by hand and clawed out of their own grave (other than Buffy)?

Ooh cool list! Looks like I have a couple admirable ladies to check out… like Tank Girl and Kahlan and Cara.
Eowyn is truly badass. I would have been disappointed if she weren’t on the list. ;)

@Mike, You should. ;-) Add Catwoman to your list, since I forgot her. Even though she’s cool I guess I didn’t hold her in that high regard, since I forgot her.

@Angie, I will (Michelle Pheiffer ;-) ) once I have started my blog, lol. How can I make a blog/website like this, do you have to code it yourself or something? Or is it a ready made website where I can just add a profile for myself? I just want it to be about, my country (England) and what music and TV shows I like, fo etc for now Cheers

@Mike, I used self-hosted wordpress. It’s easy once you get past getting your own domain/hosting and installing wordpress. My host is really good and cheap (the link is in the footer).

Thanks, going to use a free site first to practice this thing, then build a professional one later on when I am confident I can do it. Cool write ups by the way :)
