Personal Music Evolution

Before I was 10 years old I wasn’t really into music too much. I’d listen to the radio just for background noise while I drew pictures or wrote in my diary, but nothing really got my attention. I was riding in the backseat of my parents’ car when a song came on the radio that I had never heard before, and I was awestruck. It was Meatloaf‘s “I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)”. Not really my favorite song or my favorite singer anymore, but back then it was all I would listen to for a while. I had my cassette recorder on the ready for when it came on the radio at home. That year for Christmas I asked for “Bat Out Of Hell”, and “Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell”. This is the time I also started to like Alanis Morissette, so I also asked for “Jagged Little Pill”. I still like Alanis, and JLP is on my list of most favoritest albums ever.

Fast forward to 1997. I was 12 and caught up in Spice Girl mania. I had to have their stuff for Christmas that year. OH and Chumbawamba. Remember them? Ah, 7th grade. That was a good year.

2000–2002. I was on a big Beatles bent. I dusted off my mom’s old John Lennon and Beatles albums and listened to them everyday after school. That was my after school ritual–listening to the Beatles and playing Mario Kart.
The summer of 2000 is when I got into the blues like Muddy Waters and Savoy Brown. On a different tangent I was also listening to the Dixie Chicks and Faith Hill, but that didn’t last very long. Around this time I also came across my parents’ old albums of Led Zeppelin and The Doors. This would be the beginning of my next musical phase.

2002–2005. I was listening to all the classic rock bands that I could, Led Zeppelin being the king of them all. Strangely enough I was the only girl in my school that listened to classic rock and wore old band tee shirts. I was already an outcast, so what the hell. It wasn’t until after I graduated high school that more and more people started wearing tee shirts of Led Zeppelin, The Doors and AC/DC. During this time I was also listening to Tina Turner and thought she was great. I was really deprived of outside musical influences except for the radio and bands that came on TV on SNL and other late night shows–like how I found out about The White Stripes. But now that I look back there wasn’t really too much to choose from if you had odd tastes like me. Rap and R&B wasn’t my thing… yet.
2006–2008. The Dark Ages, or that’s just how I refer to these 2 years of my life. Dark, in the way that I wasn’t paying attention to my musical needs and my creativity cocooned itself up because I was busy being in love, getting married and having a kid– in those ways these 2 years were pretty damn good. But just like with the real Dark Ages, the Renaissance was to follow.

2009. The beginning of this year, we moved into a new place and I got my trust lap top, Sheba ♥. So I had much more free access to great music that was both old and new. I love a big variety, from Lady GaGa to Taylor Swift and Insane Clown Posse to my favorite, System of a Down. I guess since my musical tastes evolved and expanded I can appreciate SOAD a lot more. I only heard 2 of their songs before (Toxicity and Chop Suey!) and a few of their other ones like Cigaro and Lonely Day and I liked them, but I never got a chance to dig for more until this year. One of my friends had The Great Milenko from ICP and I liked almost every song on it, so when I got the chance I looked for more from them.
Those were just the major milestones, this doesn’t cover everything I have to say about music at all. I’ll save that for a later day.
What were you listening to 10 years ago? 5 years ago? How has your musical taste evolved?

Oh man, my musical tastes have reached pretty much every extremity. XD I first got into Amy Grant and Celine Dion when I was in about grades 3-5. From there, I went on to the Rankin Family (I CRINGE at the thought of this now). Grade 5-6 was Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys frenzy. And basically from them through to grade 9, I was super big on super sugary sweet pop music. About grade 10, I ventured into rock like Our Lady Peace and Linkin Park. I went through a country phase in grade 11 with Faith Hill and Leann Rimes. Grade 12 was the R&B phase with Beyonce, Brandy, and Ashanti. And then the last 6 years, my tastes have pretty much stayed the same – I’m into folk, electronica, dance, indie stuff-age now. But I guess since I’ve loved so many different styles over the years, I kind of have a soft spot for lots of different things now.

This was a cool article! I first started getting into music around second and third grade elementary school. My favorite artists were Aqua (they still are!), Spice Girls, Will Smith, and TLC. I would come home after school to watch music videos at this age alot. Then around middle school I got into a lot of punk and goth music, then classic rock, then electronic and indie. Now I just love everything, but especially forest bands &fairytale rock. Think Emilie Autumn, Magic Wands, The Pixies, Forest City Lovers, Forest, Smashing Pumpkins, The Antlers, My Little Pony, Doe Deere, Sky Salt…

10 years ago I was listening to a lot of alternative – Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, etc. and I still love these bands. But I think in the last 5 years my musical tastes have gotten darker. I discovered electro/industrial artists such as Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Apoptygma Berzerk, Switchblade Symphony, and KMFDM. And I got into thrash metal, doom metal, and black metal.
When I first started listening to music back in elementary school I was into whatever was on the radio – pop, r & b, rap, rock. My favorite artists back then were Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Madonna, and Snoop Dogg

Ohh music phases! I’ve gone through a few myself.
7-10 – Listened to mom’s old Abba tapes.
10-12 – Eurotechno, eurotechno and more eurotechno!
12-15 – During this time I kinda lost interest in music since I didn’t find much of the music on the radio and MTV appealing. I listened to Spice Girls for a while as well as BSB.
15 – I discover Nirvana and with that the world of alternative music opens up for me! Since then I’ve had a wide taste in music with my favourite genres being alternative rock, goth, industrial and indie pop.
I’ll send you some candy + a christmas card this weekend btw!

Actually.. I grew up listening to good ‘ol Meat, too! My parents loved that entire album. So I knew the words to all of the songs…and loved it.
Then I also went into the Spice Girl phase, went to the concert and dressed up like Posh Spice, the whole works.
Then…I had my Rolling Stones phase that went into Brit rock that has lead me into Alternative/Indie rock, where I comfortably sit today.
Cute blog post, though. It’s fun to stroll down memory lane!

Oh dear, I can’t make a really accurate list because I’ve always been in love with music.
5-12: Backstreet Boys(I’ve seen them 5 times in concert), Alanis Morissette, Nsync, 98 Degrees, Spice Girls, and O-Town.
12-16: Good Charlotte, Greenday, Simple plan, Korn, The Veronica’s, Kelly Clarkson, Sarah McCauhlin*, Live, Fall Out Boy, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Beatles, and a lot more.
16-21: Lady Gaga, Regina Specktor, Paramore, Tegan and Sara, Sarah Brightman, 10 Years, Linkin Park, Disturbed, and so much more.
This dosen’t even do justice to the real range I have. Though mostly I like pop/vocal and every type or rock. I still love everything I’ve every truly loved listening to from BSB to Disturbed.
